OVERVIEW
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
In 2005, Osaka Jogakuin College introduced the idea of a short-term
culture exchange with one or two Asian countries in which English would
be the common language. The program would annually rotate between
countries. The program started in 2006 when students from OJC traveled
to Yuan Ze University in Taiwan for an intercultural camp in which
Japanese and Taiwanese students talked in English about culture,
college, history and everyday life. This event was successful beyond
our expectations as the students soon became close friends
communicating in English and the international language of laughter and
jokes. In 2007, the YZU students visited Japan for an equally
successful program in a different country. The program has continued in
this rotating fashion and in 2009 OJC and YZU students will return to
Osaka.
GOAL
The purpose of the Intensive English Program (IEP) is to provide
students from Yuan Ze University and Osaka Jogakuin College
opportunities for developing better culture understanding through
diverse activities using the shared second language of English. This
year, participants from YZU can get to know more about the lives of
college students in Japan. Furthermore, students from both institutions
can exchange ideas and thoughts, develop a better understanding of the
respective cultures, and build closer relationships with each other. In
this way, students improve their English communication skills and
enrich their cross-cultural experiences throughout the program.
The goals of the culture camp are as follows:
- To help participants learn through experience about the culture and
life experiences of each other in order to become aware of similarities
and differences.
- To provide all students opportunities to communicate in English in
both formal and informal contexts in order to improve their English
abilities, develop confidence in speaking and meeting new people, and
raise awareness of the importance of using English as a tool for
communicating.
- To learn about the cultures of the countries
