On this course, we will read short stories by the brilliant Irish author, playwright and poet Oscar Wilde. The charming stories were written for children. However, despite their apparent simplicity, they challenge adults with fresh insight into a range of common human emotions and experiences including love, hate, compassion, wealth, poverty, greed, generosity, as well as elements of magic and mystery. We will read each story and then form a Reading Circle to discuss the content. This course aims to make reading a more enjoyable and meaningful shared experience while developing speaking and listening skills as well as vocabulary building.

I spent my childhood in Sri Lanka, my teens and 20’s in the United Kingdom and most of my working life teaching English in Japan. I have experienced and learned much from living in these three very diverse cultures. As a result, I have a wide range of interests. I also love learning and strongly believe in continuing to change and grow through lifetime education. As the famous playwright George Bernard Shaw said, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself”.
